Tavullia
È posto
in posizione collinare, a ridosso della valle del torrente Tavollo
che in località Gabicce Mare segna il confine tra Marche
e Romagna.
Chiamato anticamente
(sec. XIII) Castrum Tumbae Montis Pelosi ne ha derivato
la denominazione popolare di 'Tomba'. Luogo di scontri e battaglie
tra i Malatesta e i Montefeltro, fu soggetto a quelle signorie
che si succedettero nel governo di Pesaro. I Della Rovere vi
fecero costruire una rocca abbattuta sul finire del sec. XIX.
Meta di pellegrinaggi è stato ed è il santuario
di S.Pio Martire al cui interno è conservata un'urna con
la spoglie del Santo.
Il territorio fu un tempo disseminato di numerosi castelli, oggi
del tutto scomparsi e dei quali possono essere ricordati: Monteluro,
Montepeloso e Montelevecchio (oggi Belvedere Fogliense per l'eccezionale
vista panoramica che offre sulla valle del Foglia).
In
una grande casa di campagna, in località Rio Salso, è
vissuto per alcuni decenni fino alla morte l'affermato scrittore
fanese Fabio Tombari (1899-1989), il noto autore di "Frusaglia",
"Il libro degli animali", "I ghiottoni",
"L'incontro", "Il libro di Tonino" e "Renda
e Rondò" per ricordare solo le opere più note.
